How Many Balls in a Large Bucket Golf?

Golfers who like practicing on driving ranges go for large golf buckets as they offer the most optimal number of golf balls for practice. For some, large buckets are too much, so they opt for medium-sized buckets. But how many balls does a large golf bucket contain?

A large golf bucket contains around 100 golf balls. Some large buckets have as many as 120 balls, and some have only 80. The number depends on a bucket’s design and a driving range’s policy. Apart from large buckets, you can get small and medium buckets.

In this article, I’ll mention how many golf balls come in large buckets, other available bucket sizes, and the number of balls they contain. Since the number of balls in a bucket depends on a ball’s dimension, I’ll include that information also.

Available Golf Bucket Sizes

The large bucket is the common size many golfers opt for when practicing, and since it contains anywhere from 100 to 120 balls, large buckets are perfect for practice. However, large buckets are too big for some golfers, so they choose smaller buckets to avoid becoming too tired.

Smaller bucket sizes than a large (10 x 10 inch or 25.4 x 25.4 cm) include:

  • Small buckets (6 x 8 in or 15.2 x 20.3 cm): These contain around 40 balls.
  • Medium buckets (8.5 x 8.75 in or 21.6 x 22.2 cm): These contain around 70 balls.

Some manufacturers produce “warm-up baskets” that contain 25-30 golf balls.

You can use about 25 balls for a warm-up and choose a smaller bucket size for practice. Some companies also produce buckets bigger than large buckets that can fit around 200 balls, which are usually called Extra large or Jumbo buckets.

Since some driving ranges charge their customers based on the bucket size and the number of balls, you’ll need to find a size that works for you. Always check your driving range’s policy about the number of balls per bucket.

For instance, Village Links‘ large buckets only have 75 balls and cost $14.

Golf Bucket Size Worldwide: Is There a Difference?

Golf bucket sizes are universal worldwide because golf balls are identical, but it wasn’t always like that.

Before 1974, British golf balls were slightly smaller than American ones, which affected tournament results. Since 1974, all golf balls have been precisely 1.68” (4.26 cm) in diameter, including range balls from driving ranges.

Therefore, variations in the number of balls per bucket don’t occur because balls are different in size. Variations happen largely due to a bucket’s design.

There are generally two uniform designs:

  • Metal wire
  • Plastic wide mesh

This is standard worldwide, but in the UK, some manufacturers produce square dispenser baskets. Plastic buckets can generally fit slightly more balls than metal ones.

Final Thoughts

Generally, large buckets contain around 100 golf balls, but the number can range from about 80 to 120. The exact number depends on the design, not on a golf ball. The balls’ dimension is 1.68” (4.26 cm), so they’re all identical. Apart from large-sized buckets, driving ranges offer:

  • Small buckets (around 40 balls)
  • Medium buckets (around 70 balls)
