Are Driving Ranges Open In The Rain?

If you plan on taking some practice swings at a driving range, but the weather doesn’t seem like it will hold up, you may be wondering whether or not the driving range stays open during inclement weather. In other words, you may be wondering if driving ranges stay open when it rains.

To help you figure out the answer to this question, I called more than 10 different driving ranges all throughout the country to figure out whether or not they are open when it rains, snows, etc. Below is what those driving ranges told me.

Are driving ranges open in the rain? Yes, most driving ranges are open during the rain. Generally speaking, whether it is a light drizzle or a heavy downpour, driving ranges will stay open. This applies to both indoor and outdoor driving ranges.

Why Do Driving Ranges Stay Open When It Rains?

The rain doesn’t inhibit a driving range from operating. Their mats, ball collecting carts, etc. can still be used regardless of if it’s raining or not, so there is no reason for them to be closed.

Depending on if the driving range you are going to is indoor or outdoor, you may have to consider if you will get wet. If you go to an outdoor driving range, you may want to pack some extra rain gear so that you and your clubs stay dry while it rains.

Are Driving Ranges Open In The Winter?

Despite the fact that the golfing season mostly takes place during the spring and summer, most people still like to take the sport into the winter months. Getting some practice swings during the winter time is totally allowed by most driving ranges.

In other words, most driving ranges are open during the winter.

You are likely to see a lot of other golfers at the driving range during the winter, as there are some golfers who don’t like golfing when the courses aren’t in their peak condition.

Are Driving Ranges Open In The Snow?

Yes, most driving ranges are open even when it snows out. Although it may be quite cold out, driving ranges stay open during any types of weather including snow, sleet, etc.

The one downside to going to the driving range when it’s snowing out, is it’s going to be quite difficult to track your ball in the air. If you have regular white golf balls, it will almost get immediately lost as soon as it leaves your mat.

Other than that, if you don’t mind the cold weather, then going to the driving range in the snow will be a total blast!

Final Thoughts: Are Driving Ranges Open In The Rain?

So, as we’ve seen most driving ranges are open regardless of what the weather is like. So you can plan on going regardless of what the forecast is. It could never hurt to call ahead of time just to make sure they are open, but in case you forget to call, this is good information to know.
