Differences Between Scotty Cameron Newport 2 and Newport 2.5

There are two big differences between the Newport 2 and the Newport 2.5. The first difference is in the MOI. The Newport 2 has a medium MOI, whereas the Newport 2.5 has a high MOI. The second difference between the two is that the Offset for the Newport 2 is Full Shaft, and the Offset for the Newport 2.5 is ¾ shaft.

Now that the differences have been established, it’s time to explore what these differences mean to you and your golf game.

Offset: Newport 2 vs Newport 2.5

In terms of Offset, the Newport 2 has full shaft offset and the 2.5 has ¾ shaft offset. This basically means that the shaft is 1 full shaft diameter in front of the clubhead for the Newport 2 and about ¾ of the shafts diameter ahead of the clubhead for the 2.5. While the difference is small, it may have some type of impact on your golf game.

For righties, more offset means you are more likely to hit the ball more left. For lefties, more offset will likely make you hit the ball more right. Less offset means that you are going to hit the ball more on center. Depending on what your swing is like, you may need a club that will even out the direction of your shot.

MOI: Newport 2 vs Newport 2.5

The next difference between these clubs is MOI. MOI is essentially how prone a golf club is to twisting when impact is made. A club with lower MOI is more prone to twisting, whereas a club with High MOI is much less prone to twisting.

In the case of these two clubs, the Newport 2 has medium-high MOI and the Newport 2.5 has high MOI. This means that the Newport 2.5 is going to be a bit more forgiving. If you struggle to hit the ball in the center of the club face, then the 2.5 is likely a better club for you.

Similarities: Newport 2 vs Newport 2.5

Not only do these clubs share a similar name, but they also share a number of similar specs. In fact, these clubs share a majority of the same specs to one another. Below are the specs that the Newport 2 and 2.5 have in common.

Newport 2 Newport 2.5
Loft3.5°3.5°
Lie70°70°
Length33”, 34”, 35”33”, 34”, 35”
Weight30, 35, 40 grams30, 35, 40 grams
GripPistolini PlusPistolini Plus

To list it out, these two clubs have the same Loft, Lie, Length, Weight, and Grip. It is very clear that both of these clubs operate similarly to one another. The main reason behind this is because the 2.5 is based off of the 2. In other words, Scotty Cameron took the design of the Newport 2, and added a few tweaks, which he then released as the 2.5.

Legality: Newport 2 vs Newport 2.5

Now that we know the similarities and differences between these clubs, it is important to know whether they are legal to use. Believe it or not, there are countless illegal putters out there. Without checking, it may be hard to see whether or not a club you have is illegal.

To check and see if the Newport 2 and Newport 2.5 are legal, I went to the equipment rules (created by the USGA and R&A). According to the USGA, both the Newport 2 and Newport 2.5 are legal to use in any casual, high-level amateur, and professional golf outings
