While Callaway is a well-known and respectable golf brand, they have a handful of discontinued golf balls for various reasons. The Callaway Diablo was popular for a couple of years, but it was quickly canceled.
The Callaway Diablo golf ball was discontinued in 2016 due to poor customer reviews, product inconsistencies, and higher sales from competing golf ball companies. Furthermore, Callaway wasn’t selling as many Diablo golf balls as they were with their Supersoft series (and other golf ball series).
Throughout this post, I’ll explain why Callaway discontinued the Diablo lineup, what replaced it, and whether or not you can still find these golf balls.
Why Did Callaway Discontinue the Diablo Golf Ball?
Calloway discontinued the Diablo golf ball because there were far too many customer complaints regarding cracked cores and inconsistent flight patterns. Some of their golf balls have fewer divots than others, which affects the speed, spin rate, and many other aspects.
According to the Kid Golfer, many of the Diablo golf balls has off-center cores. When the core is off-center, it can make it almost impossible to be accurate. While the vast majority of Callaway Diablo golf balls were made with precision, there were enough mistakes to create a bad name for the Diablo series.
Here are a few more reasons why the Callaway Diablo golf balls are discontinued:
- Inconsistent mixing made some golf balls more durable than others.
- Callaway golf balls are known for having mixed reviews when compared to Taylormade, Titleist, and Srixon.
- They didn’t compare to competitors in terms of carrying yardage .
What Replaced the Callaway Diablo Golf Ball?
The Callaway Supersoft Golf Ball replaced the Diablo golf ball. These golf balls have softer cores and much more durable urethane shells, providing more flexibility, durability, and distance. As of late, Callaway has no plans of discontinuing the Supersoft ball, especially since it’s one of the industry’s top sellers.
Callaway Superball Balls (available on Amazon.com)come in six colors, each of which is designed for a high launch and a long hangtime. These two-layer balls have a solid rubber core, which drastically improves their overall distance. Every Superball has 328 dimples, which is well above the recommended 300-dimple minimum suggestion.
Can You Still Buy Callaway Diablo Golf Balls?
You can still buy Callaway Diablo golf balls on eBay, Etsy, Mercari, and various golf shops that carry these golf balls. While the company doesn’t produce them, high-quality, standard Callaway Diablo golf balls are still a great buy.
Skilled Golf reports Callaway Diablo balls are worth using because they create a unique backspin once they hit the green. This prevents them from rolling too far, but it also helps them stick where they land. In fact, these golf balls are nearly perfect for those practicing their putting skills.
Final Thoughts
While Callaway Diablo golf balls aren’t being produced, they’re still in circulation. Well-made Diablo golf balls are great, but the inconsistency makes them too unreliable. That being said, you could use them as practice golf balls at a driving range.
