Whether you are looking to ship a dozen golf balls to a friend and want to know about how much the package will weigh, or are just curious about what the average 12- pack of golf balls weighs, you’ve come to the right place. I recently sold a used pack of 12 golf balls online and needed to figure out how much they weighed so that I could pre-pay for the shipping. I figured some other people might need this information too, so I decided to write a quick post about it.
I took a look at 7 of the most common golf ball brands and analyzed their weights to find out exactly how much a pack of 12 golf balls weighs.
How much does a dozen golf balls weigh? On average, a dozen golf balls weighs anywhere from 1 lbs to 1.26 lbs. From our findings though, the most common weight for a 12 pack of golf balls is 1.21 lbs. This translates to about 549 grams or 19.36 oz per dozen golf balls.
It is important to note that there are countless golf balls out there, so the average weight of a dozen golf balls can vary based on brand, type, etc. However, the golf balls tested for this article are some of the most common balls available, so these numbers are applicable to most 12-packs of golf balls.
Golf Ball Weight Comparison Chart
Different brands manufacture their golf balls at different weights. This means that depending on the brand that you buy, the weight of your golf balls might be different than another golf ball brand. So, golf balls manufactured by Titleist might have a different weight than golf balls manufactured by Bridgestone.
I decided to go into my golf back and individually weighed the golf balls on a scale. In total, I measured the weight of 7 different golf ball brands.
Brand 1 Ball Weight (grams) 12 Golf Balls Weight (lbs)
Bridgestone 37.75 1.00
Kirkland 47.56 1.26
Pinnacle 45.80 1.21
Taylormade 45.80 1.21
Titleist 45.70 1.21
Top Flite 45.90 1.22
Advantage 45.80 1.21
Do All Golf Balls Weigh the Same Amount?
I decided to weigh the golf balls individually in order to get an exact weight. This would allow me to see if every golf ball weighs the same amount. Luckily, I had a super precise light-weight scale around to help me with this. Here is what I found.
While most golf balls are similar in weight, not every golf ball weighs the same amount. From my findings, most golf balls fall in between the weight range of 37.75 grams to 47.56 grams. This translates to a range of 0.083 lbs – 0.105 lbs or 1.33 oz – 1.68 oz per golf ball.
Despite the fact that most golf balls are so similar in shape and size, there is a slight difference in the weight of individual golf balls. Most share an average weight of about 45.8 grams to 45.9 grams. In fact, according to the USGA’s golf ball weight rule, an individual golf ball must not be more than 45.93 grams in weight. Below is a direct quote from the USGA’s ruling on golf ball mass.
“3.1. Ball mass a. For each golf ball, the mass shall be compared to the 1.620 oz. avoirdupois (45.93 g) limit. b. If four or more masses exceed this limit, then the sample shall be ruled nonconforming to the Equipment Rules, Part 4, Section 2. 3.2.”
What is interesting is that most of the golf ball brands listed above are very close to the legal limit of golf ball weight. From what it seems, most retail golf balls are on the heavier side, as very few golf balls that I’ve seen fall below 45 grams.
How Many Golf Balls Are in a Pound?
Simple math will show that with there being about 453.5 grams in 1 pound and with the average ball weighing around 45.7 to 45.9 grams, we can easily calculate how many golf balls are in 1 pound by dividing 453.5 grams by the weight of an individual golf ball.
So, according to our calculations, there will be about 10 golf balls in a pound. To be more specific, there will be anywhere from 9.90 to 9.92 golf balls in a pound. Below is the math to prove it:
453.5/45.8 = 9.90
453.5/45.7 = 9.92
This means that for about every 10 golf balls you carry with you, you will be adding an additional pound to your load. So, if you are carrying your bag for a round of 9 or 18 holes, you may want to reconsider how many golf balls to bring with you, as they can add a serious amount of weight to your bag.
How Much Does a 100 Golf Balls Weigh?
Similar to the calculation above, all we need to do is multiply the individual weight of a golf ball by 100 to get our range. Because the average ball weighs about 45.7 to 45.8 grams, those are the numbers we will be using for this calculation.
On average, a set of 100 golf balls can weigh anywhere from 4,570 grams – 4,580 grams. This translates to about 161.2 oz – 161.5 oz or 10.07 lbs – 10.09 lbs for 100 golf balls.
How Much Does 600 Golf Balls Weigh?
Just like the calculation above, we simply need to multiply the weight of one golf ball by a multiple of 600 in order to get the average weight of 600 golf balls. For this we will use the average weight range for a single golf ball, 45.70 grams – 45.80 grams.
On average, 600 golf balls weigh anywhere from 27,420 grams – 27,480 grams. This translates to about 60.45 lbs – 60.5 lbs, or 967.2 oz – 969.33 oz.
