Is A 72 Degree Wedge Legal In Golf?

There are many benefits to a 72 degree golf club. For most casual golfers, it can help them immensely in the short game. But with so much promise, are these types of clubs even legal? To help you answer this question, I took a look at the USGA’s equipment rules to find out if the 72 degree loft is allowed.

Is a 72 degree wedge legal in golf? According to the USGA, a 72 degree wedge is totally legal to use in golf. More specifically, any golfer is allowed to use a 72 degree wedge in all casual, high-level amateur, or professional rounds/tournaments.

Believe it or not, the USGA does not have any loft restrictions for wedges. So, this means that you are able to play with wedges of all loft angles. In fact, you can even have a loft of 90 degrees if you wanted to (although this wouldn’t yield good results for any golfer).

Is BombTech’s 72 Degree Wedge Legal?

One of the more popular 72 degree wedges out there is Bombtech’s 72 degree wedge. Before purchasing it, most customers want to know if it is even legal to use. To establish some background, back in 2016, BombTech released a new wedge that has 72 degrees of loft.

One of the biggest talking points about this club was how high the loft was in comparison to the other wedges that they sell. So, along with all of the other talk going on surrounding this club, many wondered if it was even legal.

According to the USGA’s rules, BombTech’s 72 degree wedge is legal to use in any golf round or tournament.

What Would You Use A 72 Degree Wedge For?

It’s no secret that most professionals would never need something like a 72 degree wedge in their bag. However, this does not indicate that it is a bad club to have. In fact, something like a 72 degree wedge is likely the most beneficial club for casual or beginner players. Here’s why.

You would mainly use a 72 degree wedge for shots with bad lies, or short distance shots. Any shot where you just need to get the ball up in the air, without hitting it too far.

As stated above, there is one clear benefit (among many others) that a 72 degree wedge provides:

  1. Easily attainable height

No matter what kind of predicament you might be in (bad lie, high grass, sand trap, etc.), having a club that lets you easily get the ball high into the air while controlling the distance is a game changer.

It is perfect for those shots that are right off of the green. So, for players who struggle to hit the ‘up and on’ types of shots, this club will likely benefit you the most.

What Is The Highest Legal Loft Wedge?

Currently, the USGA has no limit on the amount of loft that a wedge can have. In other words, you can have any loft on your wedge and it would be considered legal by the USGA.

This doesn’t mean that you SHOULD have all types of lofted wedges. While there are benefits to most wedge lofts, some are more trouble than they are worth. Once you go above the mid 70 degree clubs, there is really no purpose.
