Are Nike SasQuatch Drivers Illegal?

The Nike SasQuatch driver series is among Nike’s most extensive line of golf clubs. There are more than 80 versions of the club available for purchase. Some talk online has been going around that the SasQuatch drivers are actually illegal. With claims so bold, I had to find out the answer.

Are Nike SasQuatch Drivers Illegal? According to the USGA and Randa.org, all versions of the Nike SasQuatch driver are legal to use in all casual, amateur, high-level amateur, and professional tournaments. In other words, all versions of the Nike SasQuatch (SQ) driver are legal. This includes the Dymo, 460, Machspeed, Sumo², Sumo, and Tour.

After looking into all versions of the Nike SasQuatch driver, it appears that there are over 80 different iterations of this golf club. Most of them are variations of the ones listed above. Each and every variation of this golf club is considered legal by all governing bodies’ equipment regulations.

Below I will break down exactly what these governing bodies are and where this information can be found.

Randa.org (R&A): Legality of Nike SasQuatch

One of the governing bodies of professional golf is Randa, or R&A. They help organize international golf outings as well as regulate various rules of golf, including the equipment. They have a public database that allows anyone to view the names of any and all conforming golf clubs.

By searching for the name of the club or the series of clubs, you are able to view all versions of that club that conform to the golf equipment rules. Through this, it is very easy to find out whether or not a club conforms to the rules of golf.

Below is a screenshot from the database when filtered for ‘SasQuatch’ under ‘Conforming Drivers’.

It is hard to fit all of the clubs in the screenshot, so this picture is just a small sample of all the different legal versions of the club. What makes this database even more helpful is that it allows you to view the available lofts as well as the different identification marks on each club like the hosel design, groove markings, etc.

USGA: Legality of Nike SasQuatch

Another great resource to see if a golf club is legal is the USGA’s conforming golf club list. This list is a frequently updated PDF of every single club that conforms to the USGA equipment standards. While extensive, this list is great to have on hand if you need to quickly check whether or not a golf club is illegal.

I quickly did a search for ‘SQ’ (a commonly used abbreviation for the SasQuatch Driver Series) and was able to find all variations of the Nike driver. Below is a screenshot of the first few clubs that are on the list.

Keep in mind, there are over 80 different versions of this club, so I was only able to fit a couple. But if you check out the list yourself, you will be able to see all of the ones included.

Final Thoughts: Is The Nike SasQuatch Club Illegal?

Despite a lot of chatter online about these clubs being illegal, there are plenty of resources that show the exact opposite. The nice thing about using the USGA and Randa databases is that they are both the governing bodies of all major golf tours. So any information that comes from their websites is always reliable and up to date.

So, if you are interested in any of the SasQuatch clubs, you can rest assured that they are all legal to use.
