S-Grind vs M-Grind | Difference Between Vokey Grind

The S Grind and M GRind are among Vokey’s most popular types of grinds for their wedges. While grinds are somewhat of an unknown topic, they do play an important role in your golf game. I took some time to compare these grinds and briefly break down the similarities and differences for you.

What are the differences between the S Grind and M Grind? The main differences between these two grinds is that the S Grind has more relief on the heel and has higher bounce options, wherasa the M Grind has more Heel and Toe relief, but has lower bounce options.

S-Grind vs M-Grind: Sole

The first difference between the S Grind and M Grind is in the sole. The S Grind has a shallower heel on the sole, and the M Grind has a shallower heel and toe. The difference in where the sole is grinded presents different benefits for each club.

For the most part, a sole that only has the heel grinded is better for players with a shallower angle of attack. The grinded heel ensures that there is enough room for the club to swing through without catching the ground.

The M grind is better for players who have a steeper angle of attack. Both the heel and toe of the sole are grinded. So there is a bit more room for players with a steeper angle of attack to swing through without catching too much of the ground on it.

S-Grind vs M-Grind: Bounce Options

The next difference between these grinds is the bounce options. Both the S Grind and M Grind have different angels of bounce to pick from. The S Grind has 10 degrees of bounce and the M Grind has 8 degrees of bounce. Depending on what you are used to or what you are looking for, this may make a difference on which one you pick.

For the most part, the more bounce that a club has, the more forgiving it is. So for beginners, it is probably best to pick the S Grind as it is going to be much friendlier to use on the course in comparison to the M Grind.

S-Grind vs M-Grind: Bounce Type

One of the similarities between the S Grind and the M Grind is the type of bounce that you’ll get. Both of them offer a Mid bounce. This means that you are going to get the same type of response from the club when making contact with the ground and the ball. While the bounce type is not going to make too much of a difference in your overall shot, it is good to point out that it is a similarity between these grinds.

So, barring the other specs, the bounce on each grind will give you the same type of result.

S-Grind vs M-Grind: Best Conditions

The final part of the comparison is analyzing what type of conditions these grinds are best for. While you can use these grinds in a variety of conditions, they are made to perform optimally in certain conditions. Both of these grinds are meant to perform at their best when they are playing on neutral turf.

What this basically means is that they perform the best when the ground is not too hard nor too soft. So no matter where you are located or what the typical weather and ground conditions are like, both of these grinds will perform very similarly, barring other specs of the grind.
