The Wilson Deep Red Driver series began back in 2001. Since then, there are about 8 different drivers that are a part of the Deep Red series. These drivers were known for their candy apple red color and their ‘fat shaft’. Since its release, a lot of equipment rules have changed, many wonder if this club is now illegal.
To see if this club is illegal or not, I looked at the USGA and R&A’s equipment rules to figure out whether or not this club still conformed to the rules. In other words, I took a look to see whether or not this club is still legal by today’s standards.
Is the Wilson Deep Red driver Illegal? According to the USGA and R&A, the Wilson Deep Red driver is totally legal to use in all casual, amateur, high-level amateur, and professional games. This includes the Deep Red 460, Max 425, Steel, WT100, 305cc, 365cc, and 425cc. All versions of the Deep Red driver are legal to use.
R&A Conforming Driver Database: Legality Of Wilson’s Deep Red Driver
One great resource to see if a golf club is legal to use or not, is the R&A’s conforming driver database. This database allows anyone to search for conforming golf clubs. The database has every single legal golf club and its index, which means that if a club is legal, it will be in this database.
To see whether or not this club is legal, I filtered the database for ‘deep red’, I then filtered the manufacturer results for ‘Wilson sporting goods’, and then set the final filter for ‘conforming drivers’. With all of these filters turned on, the database will only return conforming golf clubs made by Wilson that had the name ‘deep red’.
The above screenshot is only showing 3 out of the 10 legal Deep Red drivers. I was not able to fit all 10 drivers in a screenshot, so this is more of a sample. If you would like to see all versions of the conforming driver, feel free to check out the database yourself.
Something I like to point out is that if you hover over one of the pictures of the drivers, a ‘more details’ option pops up. This allows you to see more details on the available lofts and it will show you the main identifying marks of the club.
USGA Conforming Club List: Legality Of Deep Red Drivers
Another useful resource is the USGA’s conforming club list. This is an extensive and frequently updated PDF that shows any and all conforming golf clubs in existence. Similar to the R&A club database, it also shows the available lofts and other identifying information.
As you can see from the screenshot, the Deep Red drivers are included on this list. Once again, I was not able to fit all of the versions of this club in the screenshot, so consider this as more of a sample.
Final Thoughts: Is The Wilson Deep Red Driver Illegal?
So, after checking the regulations of both governing bodies of golf, it is clear that the series of Wilson Deep Red Drivers are NOT illegal. So, you can have this club in your bag with confidence and without worry that someone is going to call you out for having some type of non-conforming club.
